Communities

We partner with our communities to understand and help deliver on their priorities. In addition, we proactively engage all stakeholders and uphold human rights in our operations and activities.

Igniting the change

Together we share a purpose to make a positive social impact that adds value to the lives of our people and communities. This video illustrates the great ways in which we have made those social contributions.

Thungela engages with local communities where we operate to maintain a strong understanding of their needs and to address any concerns as they arise.

Thungela already exceeds the legislated black-ownership requirements under South Africa’s Mining Charter. Going further beyond regulatory requirements, we have also chosen a community and staff empowerment model, that gives each group a near immediate and unencumbered perpetual 5% interest in Thungela, which will distribute shareholder dividends from 2021.

We are committed to promoting an inclusive and diverse environment, representative of the demographics within our operating footprint. We are also committed to increasing female representation at all levels and have made considerable progress, targeting 25% for middle and senior management female representation, and 22% for top management by 2023.

We are proud of our representation of HDPs on all core and critical skills, achieving 86% representation against a target of 60% by the end of 2020. In addition, we are proactively working to increase the awareness of unconscious bias through Bullying, Harassment and Violence (BHV) training.
