Our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship is based on the efficient use of resources, climate risk management, promoting biodiversity and land stewardship.

Efficient Use of Resources

Thungela strives to use all our resources, including water and energy, efficiently. We also focus on minimising our waste generation and being cognizant of our work's impact on air quality.

Mining coal is one of the most water intensive methods of generating electricity that may impact the local water supply. As Responsible Water Stewards, Thungela investigates and implements solutions that result in no permanent harm being caused by our operations to local communities and the environment. Our target is to achieve zero reportable environmental incidents pertaining to water.

Emalahleni Water Reclamation Plant

An example of one of our successful projects is the Emalahleni Water Reclamation Plant.

  • We transform an environmental liability into a valuable water resource, that provides 10 megalitres of drinking water per day, to augment drinking water supply to Emalahleni local municipality residents.
  • During construction, this project resulted in 57 permanent and 700 temporary jobs.
  • Continued water treatment and reticulation to municipalities, communities, and the environment, remains a priority for Thungela and is an area for expansion.

Climate Risk Management

Thungela proactively measures, understands, and works to manage our impact on air quality, as well as our climate risks and opportunities.

  • Thungela is committed to reducing our operational (scope 1 and 2) greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Thungela will report on greenhouse gas emmissions in line with the regulatory requirements and corporate reporting standard, ie. The GHG Protocol and ISO14064-1.
  • We are committed to disclosure related to climate risks and are aligned to the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
  • The Group intends to leverage strategic relationships to support reduced emissions from the usage of thermal coal.

Land Stewardship and Biodiversity

We minimise any impact we have on biodiversity. We will close mines responsibly to ensure a sustainable future land use.

Some of our projects include:

  • Our irrigation trial at Mafube tests the viability of using rehabilitated ground, as well as used mine water for agriculture.
  • Our pilot eDNA at Isibonelo Colliery analyses samples to determine the positive or negative impacts of rehabilitation on the environment.

Creating site biodiversity management plans for all our sites, by the end of 2021.
